Circumcision is the surgical removal of the foreskin, the fold of skin that covers the head (glans) of the penis. It is commonly performed on newborn boys in some cultures and religions, such as Judaism and Islam, and is also done for medical, cultural, or personal reasons.

In medical contexts, circumcision is sometimes recommended to treat or prevent conditions like phimosis (tight foreskin), recurrent infections, or to reduce the risk of certain infections and diseases, including HIV and other sexually transmitted infections.

The procedure is generally quick, lasting about 10 to 30 minutes, and can be done under local or general anesthesia depending on the age and condition of the patient. After the procedure, it usually takes about one to two weeks for the penis to heal.
