Matter primarily exists in three states: solids, liquids, and gases. Solids have a fixed shape and volume because their particles are tightly packed and vibrate in place. Liquids maintain a definite volume but take the shape of their container, as their particles are close but can move past each other. Gases have neither a definite shape nor volume; their particles are widely spaced and move freely, allowing gases to expand or compress to fill any space.
